Nine years of refinement produces the 1993 Air Jordan shoe. Michael helps design the first Air Jordan that he never wears in competition. Michael announces he will turn his talents to the sport of baseball. Doing what he’s always done – playing for the love of the game.

On October 6th 1993, Jordan gave the basketball world a shock when he announced his retirement from the NBA. This was just one day before Training Camp and it was not what anyone had expected at this time. The greatest basketball player of all time retiring at the age of 30. A decision probably affected by the fact that his father was murdered in North Carolina in the summer of 1993.
Multilingual
The shoe being released was plain and sturdy and was the first model that Michael did not wear in an NBA seasonal game (due to the retirement). The sole had lots of details and a large 23 was stiched at the back of the shoe.
There were also words in different languages on the soles of the shoes, this is what is said;

Cleated air
As Michael had placed the basketball on the curb he decided to take on the game of baseball. A special cleated version of the IX’s was made and helped him in his Birmingham Barons baseball career.
The Air Jordan’s had not disappeared from the courts though. Known as player samples there were Air Jordan IX’s being produced with not only #23 on the back, but with individual numbers for players such as Kendall Gill (#13), and Mitch Richmond (#2).
As we most know, the Original Air Jordan 9 (IX) was not worn by Michael Jordan, but the Air Jordan Original 9 (IX) Black / Red was a nice addition to ones collection. The Color scheme on the Air Jordan OG 9 (IX) is Black – Dark Charcoal – True Red.
Their is something about the Cool Grey colorway that makes sneaker heads go crazy. The Air Jordan 9 (IX) Retro Cool Grey did exactly that for many. Released October 25th 2002, and the Air Jordan 9 (IX) Cool Grey was a general release.
A pair of Air Jordans that are known to get dirty very fast, the Air Jordan 9 (IX) Retro Low White / White – Chrome is a nice addition to ones rotation of kicks for the summer. In addition to the rubber midsole, the White / White – Chrome Air Jordan Retro 9 (IX) featured patent leather.
Released in 2002, the White, Black and True Red Air Jordan 9 (IX) Retro has become one of the most sought after Air Jordan IX¡¯s. Although it is an original color-way, it has yet to be re-released since 2002.

The Bulls got their third consecutive NBA title. Jordan himself got his seventh straight scoring title and reached a milestone in his NBA career when scoring his 20.000th point. Seemed as if nothing ever could stop this high flying athlete…
Hot and heavy
The eighth model of the Air Jordan was one heavy thing. Its base was clearly close to its predecessor but it had a lot more details, color and accents. It had cross-over velcro/leather straps and was so padded your foot got surprised.
Due to the thick padding the shoe was heavy and also easily got very warm. Who knows, maybe the heat could have been the reason why Michael was bothered with athlete’s foot infections during the season.
Where have all the flowers gone?
On the tounge of the White/Black and All-star versions you could almost make out a peace sign and some collectors came to call this the flower-power Air Jordan.
Very surprising was that this shoe was only made in three different color combinations. Previous models had sold very well and so did the VIII’s so it’s really a big surprise that Nike decided not to make more of these. Even the quantity of shoes being produced were lower than the VII’s.

By this time nothing could stop Michael and his confidence must have been at least 110%. The Bulls won their second straight title and he picked up a number of awards and honors. Jordan also went off to the Olympics bringing home another gold medal for the USA. This of course with the unforgettable Dream Team of ‘92.
The Dream Team in 1992 dominated the world, with some of the best NBA players of all time including Michael Jordan. The pair he was wearing during the Olympics is the Air Jordan Original 7 (VII) Olympic White / Midnight Navy / True.
Hua…, who?
Hatfield created a shoe with lots of similarities with the previous model. What was unique with the VII’s was that they used some of the Nike Huarache technology to create a shoe that really stuck to your foot. What also made you either frown or smile was the fact that the visible air sole, the Nike Air logo, and the yellowing soles all were gone.
When Michael went to the Olympics with the Dream Team, Nike released a special olympic color combo of the VII’s. This model also featured Michael’s olympic jersey number, 9 which made it very special since all of the previous models that featured his jersey number had always been either stitched or printed with the number 23.
Hate it or love it
The Air Jordan VII was one of the first models that really caused the customers and collectors to take a stand. Some people straight up hated it and others loved it more than any previous model.
Sure, taste is individual and previous models had also been met with criticism but nothing as obvious as with the VII’s. Who knows, this might have been due to the fact that Jordan’s popularity was huge by now and that Air Jordan’s now were exported to all four corners of the globe making the customers a greater number than before.
Ever since the VII’s taking a stand when it comes to the design has been a lot more obvious and we’ve always seen distinct pro and con divisions within the circle of customers.

The Nike, Jordan VII Basketball Shoes are my favorite basketball shoes ever. Firstly, the fit is really good, your feet feel so nice and relaxed, which is great for the hard impact they take from basketball. Secondly, the standard of material and design is nice and definitely worth buying.

In the 90-91 season Michael added the only thing missing in his awards and titles received in the NBA. The Bulls finally won the NBA Championships beating the LA Laker’s in the final. After having lost the first game they won four straight games and were without a doubt the strongest team in the NBA in a long time.
Rubber toungie
What is there to say else than Hatfield created another classic.
This time with a rubber tounge featuring two holes which the bearer could use to easily get the kicks on.
He kept the idea with clear rubber soles and lace locks from the V’s but apart from that this felt like a brand new AJ design.
The pattern on the shoe was interesting. If you looked at it in different angels and with a little bit of imagination you could see the number 23. The figure 2 standing up on the back of the shoe and the figure 3 lying down facing the ground close to the laces (soon there will be a picture illustrating this).
Retro or a butchered classic?
Right before the retro release of the black/black-infra-red, pictures were published on webpages where it showed that they had reversed the midsole colors so that the red was now black and vice versa. This upset a whole lot of collectors and the word butchered was what would define this way of “destroying” a classic.
The final version turned out to be just as the original and the few people that were lucky enough to get the “butchered” sample version can probably make a buck or two…
The Air Jordan VI (6) Midnight Navy Retro was released on October 4th, 2000 with a retail price of $120. The combination of Midnight Navy and White, caused this Air Jordan VI to become one of the most sought after Air Jordan VI retros.
The birth of the Air Jordan 6 (VI) Low Black / Metallic Silver Low came in 2002, with many scratching their heads on a Low cut Air Jordan 6. To much dismay, the Air Jordan 6 (VI) Black / Metallic Silver Low actually did well.
When sample pictures of the Air Jordan 6 (VI) Retro Black/Deep Infra Red, otherwise known as the Infra Reds arrived online, collectors through a fit, because early samples would have the Infra Red where the Black is on the midsole.
To celebrate Michael Jordan first Championship, and first championship back from retirement, a special Air Jordan Defining Moments Pack, aka DMP released. A two pair pack, the Air Jordan VI Retro was in this pack.

The Air Jordan Dub Zeros are a new concept for Brand Jordan. The Air Jordan Dub Zero will incorporate several different elements of almost all of the Jordan shoes ranging I-XX. The Jordan Dub Zero has the sole and midsole of a Jordan IV, patent leather of the Jordan XI, shape of a Jordan XIII, lasering and 23 of the Jordan XII, woven leather on the back from the Jordan XV, chrome piece around the back from the Jordan XVII, and the loop on the back of the shoe from the Jordan VI.
The Air Jordan Dub Zero is a unique shoe in itself from all other Jordan shoes. It is the only shoe that is a collaboration of several other Jordan shoes, but it is on its own since it is not part of the Air Jordan series, it is not a Retro Jordan, and is not part of the Jumpman Series nor the Jordan Lifestyle line. The shoe sold so well in 2005 that Jordan Brand brought the shoe back one last time at the end of 2006.
The Air Jordan Dub Zeros were a new creation by Jordan Brand released in 2005. The Air Jordan Dub Zero is a mixture of a handful of Air Jordans. The Air Jordan 20 was a tribute to Michael Jordan and his career, but the Jordan Dub Zero is also a tribute to the greatest sneaker designer of all time Tinker Hatfield.
The Air Jordan Dub Zeros are going to be released in 4 colors that are confirmed. The first is White/Black-Photo Blue, the second is White/White-Ceramic, the third is Black/Black-Taupe (this looks like black and gold), and finally White/Black-Varsity Red. The Dub Zeros caught the attention of many sneaker heads and Jordan fans. As expected these shoes sold very well.

Phil Jackson took over as head coach for the Bulls in the 89-90 season. This gave the Bull’s an extra boost and everything was flying. Jordan kept on playing his game and set a personal best when scoring 69 points in a game against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
First flying design
Once again Hatfield came up with a revolutionary design for the new shoe. A few elements were picked up from its predecessor but it featured a great silver/reflex tounge and a clear/see-through rubber sole which gave it a totally unique look. Also there were lacelocks which made it easy to strap them on.
The design is rumoured to be inspired by the WW2 Mustang fighter plane and the most obvious elements that shows this are the shark teeth shapes on the midsole.Hatfield has since then found inspiration from other fast means
of conveyance, for instance the Ferrarri 550 M (XIV) and the X-15 (XV).
Yellow soles makes collectors see red
The clear rubber sole would return in later designs such as VI, XI and XVI and has upset several collectors since it very easily turns yellow. Once it’s yellow there is no way to get it back to its original look. Seems the only way to save them is to store the shoes in a cool and dry place and never take them out of their box.
The shoes were retro’d in late 1999 in white/black-fire red and black/black-met silver and once again there was a great demand for them.
